Oh Baby! Planning Your Socially Distanced Shower

There is so much to celebrate while patiently awaiting the newest member of your family! For first-time parents, the Baby Shower is an all-out occasion filled with friends and family to mark your little one’s nearing arrival. While COVID may have interrupted the traditions of shared finger foods and cute party games, you can still plan a gorgeous and memorable shower - just at a distance.

The Guest List

While the baby shower has generally been a smaller gathering of family and close friends, it’s time to make your guest list even more intimate. Decide who is most important for you to be at the shower and invite anyone else to join virtually. Whether that means inviting only local guests to come in person or keeping it to immediate family all together, the most important thing is that you are comfortable with who is attending. If you still want to include as many people as possible for this special milestone, ask guests about their vaccination status or request that guests get tested prior to your celebration. They will most likely be more than happy to oblige to be a part of your celebration!

Select Your Venue

Once you know your numbers, you can decide on a venue that can fit everyone who is attending. For a less formal celebration, stay at home where you and your guests will be most comfortable. During the warmer months, a backyard is the perfect place to hold your shower. Not only is it a private space open only to you, but it will provide plenty of room for people to socially distance. Public parks are another great option, offering lots of space and fresh air! Want to keep the party private? Check out local venues, such as hotels or restaurants, that have private rooms or patios that can be rented out for intimate parties.

Make the Menu

Pre-covid, snack bowls, and finger foods were the obvious choice for a shower. Now, parents-to-be are branching out when it comes to planning the menu and type of food service for their event. Make it formal with a seated meal or create individual snack boxes and treats for each of your guests. Not only will this add a personal touch to your shower, but it will also keep everyone’s hands off of the same canape trays.

Choose a Theme

Even amid social distancing rules, one thing that doesn’t have to change is how you choose to decorate your event. For a baby shower you can get as creative as you please but whatever direction you go, be sure to keep it bright and lively. Keep your guest tables six feet apart and assign seats to guests in couples or by family units. Other than that, here are some of our favorite baby shower themes that are far from ordinary:

  1. Starry, Starry Night

Shoot for the stars with this celestial baby shower theme. Layered blue textures with pops of yellow stars make this the perfect decor no matter your baby’s gender.

2. Whimsical Wonderland

Get inspired by this classic childhood tale to create a dreamy Alice in Wonderland-inspired shower. Mix colorful prints and patterns with added nods to the story itself through white rabbit figurines and ticking clocks. Bonus points if your venue is a lush tree-lined forest!

3. Tea Time

If you are looking for a shower that leans more towards tradition try an afternoon tea. Pick out some soft pastels and beautiful blooms to create an elegant and timeless shower for the adults.

4. Where The Wild Things Are

Get a little wild with this iconic children’s book inspired theme. Keep the decor earthy with browns and greens, and don’t forget to incorporate Max’s gold crown as table centerpieces or as a cake topper.

5. Ahoy Baby

Sail away with this nautical motif made for parents who adore the sea. Try a combination of vibrant primary colors, vertical stripes, and messages in bottles and you’ll have your guests believing they are out in the open ocean.
